Five games into the season for Chadron Cardinals softball there is one thing certain, that they can score runs and a lot of them. They proved that Tuesday night as they went to Alliance and defeated the Bulldogs 16-12.
Just three days after the Cardinals defeated the Bulldogs 16-2, Chadron got off to a hot start with a leadoff single from freshman Addie Gruver. Gruver then stole second and scored off an RBI single from Averielle Sager to put Chadron on the board. The Cardinals added three more runs in the top of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Alliance bounced back with three runs in their first trip to the plate to make it 4-3 Chadron after the first inning.
Chadron added single runs in the top of the second and third innings before the wheels game off as Alliance put up a crooked number in the bottom of the third to take an 11-6 lead.
Alliance added one more in the fourth inning to make it a 12-6 lead for the Bulldogs.
Chadron came roaring back, chipping into the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth before adding five in the top of the sixth which included the game winning run. They topped it off with three more runs of insurance in the top of the seventh to win 16-12,
Jodean Chesley went 5 for 6 with four RBIโs and a double. Sager went 1 for 4 with one RBI and a team high of five runs.
Jae Gooder got the win for the Cardinals pitching 4 2-3 innings with six strikeouts and two hits allowed.
The Cardinals as a team had 16 runs on 15 hits with six errors. Alliance had 12 runs on eight hits with 12 errors.
The Cardinals are averaging 9.8 runs per game so far this season and are 2-3. The Cardinals will next host Scottsbluff on Tuesday at Hampton Softball Field. JV will play at four with varsity to follow. We will have the varsity game onย FM 107.7 KBPY with pregame at 5:50.
