With a short agenda, the Chadron City Council met on Monday night. Topics discussed included awarding the bid for the construction of the new building at the Chadron Airport. Scott Schremmer gave the council an estimate for the cost and approximate building time.
The bid for the East 6th St. improvement project was awarded to Infinity Construction from Scottsbluff. Street Superintendent Dustin Glass said the concrete project will begin soon after Fur Trade Days.
Executive Director of Northwest Nebraska Development Cooperation John Reed gave his monthly update to the council. Reed spoke about the new spotlight on local businesses NNDC has started, highlighting members. Reed mentioned other things he’s been working on including grants to help the affordable housing shortage in Chadron. Reed said, “ This summer, I’m going to focus on members and growth.”
A hard topic was also introduced by Chadron Field Chief Branden Martens concerning the fires around Chadron. Martens confirmed the Ash Pole Fire is 90% contained and turned over to the federal government. Martens also talked about the danger of the continued dryness and the need for safety, especially with the fireworks season coming up. “It’s a conversation no one wants to have.” Martens said. The City Council and the Fire Department are looking at a total ban of fireworks this year.
