Cold-Shooting And Bad Quarter Doom Lady Eagles In Season-Ending Loss

Black Hills State outscored CSC 18-7 in the third quarter, leading them to a 60-49 victory on senior night in the Chicoine Center Thursday.
 
The loss ends the Eagles season at 4-24 overall and 4-18 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets improve to 22-6 overall and 17-5 in conference play.
 
Senior Riley Aiono scored a layup to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead in the first quarter but Yellow Jacket Megan Engesser answered 14 seconds later with a three pointer which gave her team the lead for the remainder of the game.
 
Black Hills State led by 6 points at half and extended their lead to 17 by the end of the third quarter.  
 
CSC opened the final period with a 10-0 scoring run to drop the visitors lead to seven but were unable to overcome the 17-point deficit.  
 
Aiono was joined by Ashayla Powers to lead the Eagles with nine points apiece. Another senior, Samiyah Worrell of Fountain, Colorado, finished with eight points and a game high 10 rebounds. She also added a game high six assists.
 
Niki Van Wyk and Danica Kocer both scored 11 points for the visitors. Van Wyk and Kalla Bertram finished with seven rebounds to lead their team.
 
Chadron State finished 20 of 60 (33.3 percent) from the field and 3 of 20 (15 percent) from beyond the arc. The Eagles made six of their 11 attempts from the charity stripe, good for 54.5 percent.
 
The Yellow Jackets converted 22 of their 60 shot attempts (36.7 percent) and 6 of 19 (31.6 percent) from three. They converted 10 of 13 attempts from the free throw line.
 
The Eagles scored 10 points off 16 Yellow Jacket turnovers. The visitors forced 17 turnovers for 16 points. CSC was out-rebounded 45 to 36 in the loss.
 
Olyvia Pacheco, Emily Achter, Worrell and Aiono were all honored at the conclusion of the game as the four seniors of the CSC women’s basketball team.
