Last Friday eight teams converged on Omaha, Nebraska vying for the NCAA Men’s Baseball Title and we are now down to two teams after six days of action as the number one seed Tennessee Volunteers along with the number three seeded Texas A&M Aggies. Neither team has won a championship in their history.Â
Tennessee’s journey to the finals included sweeping through their regional, having defeated Northern Kentucky, Indiana, and Southern Mississippi by comfortable margins. Then in the super regional held in Knoxville, Tennessee. Evansville took them to a winner take all before the Volunteers defeated them.
Once Tennessee got to Omaha, they got hot. Having won on a walk off to end a spectacular first day of baseball, they rolled through North Carolina before taking down Florida State 7-2 to make it to the final. Tennessee will be looking for their first NCAA baseball title and is in their first fight for the championship since 1951.
Texas A&M got to this point starting by hosting a region that saw them along with Louisiana, Texas and Grambling. A&M’s run started by an 8-0 win over Grambling then taking down old Big 12 and future SEC rival Texas 4-2. In the regional final Louisiana got another shot at the Aggies but A&M pushed them back by a 9-4 score to move on to the Super Regionals.
The Aggies drew the Oregon Ducks in the Super Regionals, in a best two out of three series the Aggies swept the Ducks to move to the College World Series.Â
In bracket two of the College World Series that saw the Aggies, along with Florida, North Carolina State, and Kentucky. The Aggies took care of business holding off late heroics by Florida in the first round, handling Kentucky 5-1 in the second round before shutting out Florida 6-0 to advance to the championship series,
Texas A&M and Tennessee are familiar with each other, both coming out of the SEC Conference, However they do not have a long series history dating back to 2005. Texas A&M leads 11-10 with the last meeting coming in the 2024 SEC Tournament with Tennessee getting the upper hand 7-4.
The Men’s College World Series Championship Series starts Saturday with game one at 5:30, game two is Sunday at noon and the if necessary, game three is Monday at 5.
