The Dawes County Commissioners have taken “interim” off the title of Sheriff Jeff Johns, formally appointing him to serve out the remaining 3-plus years of the term of Karl Dailey, who retired this summer after more than 36 years in the office.
The commissioners had followed Dailey’s recommendation and named Johns as interim sheriff, then opened applications for the permanent job with Johns the only person to file.
Board chairman Webb Johnson says he and his fellow commissioners weren’t disappointed not to get more applicants because they’ve been very happy with Johns work and looked at taking applications as simply continuing their normal policy.
Jeff Johns is a veteran law enforcement officer who was with the Chadron Police Department for several years before joining the Sheriff’s Office. He’s said that at this point, he expects to run for the office in 2026.
