Chadron State College defeated Quincy University 35-34 Thursday night in Quincy, Illinois, in a game with big swings. It was the season opener for both squads.
Â
The Eagles opened the game in rousing fashion, scoring on the second play of the game taking a 22-0 lead in the 1st quarter. Quincy closed it to 22-14, but CSC led 29-14 at halftime.
Quincy took command after intermission, scoring 20 straight points – a run that began with a 99-yard fumble recovery touchdown and ended with a running touchdown in the 4th quarter that put the Hawks on top 34-29.
Quincy had a chance to run out the clock late in the game, but CSC force a punt. The Hawks struggled in the punting game all night and this one traveled less than 20 yards, giving the Eagles the ball at the 35-yard line with just under two minutes to play.
Â
QB Heath Beemiller, who accounted for two TDs in the game, steadily moved the ball downfield and found Jahani Wright for a 1st down on 3rd and long. Two plays later, Tommy Thomas found the end zone on a jet sweep to put CSC up 35-34 with 36 seconds left.
Â
Quincy would not go down without a fight, though, and traveled to the CSC side of the field before attempting a 53-yard field goal that came up short.
Quincy’s statistics system was not working, so statistics and recaps are not available.
