With all 11 players who were in uniform playing at least seven minutes and each of them scoring, the Chadron State College men’s basketball team rolled to a 92-56 win over eastern Nebraska’s York College in a non-conference game played in Chadron on Saturday night.
The game filled in the 20-day gap in the Eagles’ schedule between their last contest on Dec. 17 and their next date on Saturday, Jan. 6 against Metro State in Denver. The win improved CSC’s record to 8-4.
The Eagles began the game by hitting a 3-pointer on their first shot, missed their next four field goal attempts, before sinking seven in row to take a 17-6 lead in the opening seven minutes.
After a couple more misses, they warmed up again and with 11 minutes off the clock had made 14 of their 22 shots from the field for 63.6% and were ahead 32-13. Ten of the Eagles had played at least five minutes by halftime when the hosts led 44-20.
For the game, Chadron State made 32 of 69 field goal shots for 46.4%, including 12 of 33 attempts from 3-point territory.
Crafty guard Bryce Latimer, the team’s leading scorer for the season, set the pace in the scoring column again with 23 points in 23 minutes on the court. Both Josh Robinson and Jalen Patterson added 12 points and Julio Phipps chipped in 10 after he’d scored just 12 in the 11 previous games.
Another newcomer this season, 6-foot-9 John Jenkins, had played in only four of the first semester games, but scored nine points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots Saturday night. Robinson was CSC’s leading rebounder with 10, giving him his fifth double-double of the season.
The Eagles out-rebounded the Panthers 53-40.
York was led by senior guard Dwight Glover, who was its only double-figure scorer with 13 points. The Panthers shot just 30% from the field and were only three of 28 from behind the arc after having shot 33.6% from long range entering the game.
York is now 4-9 for the season.
