The Chadron State College men’s cross country team finished second, and the women’s fourth, at the Gage Spadden Memorial cross country meet in Spearfish, South Dakota on Saturday evening.
Newcomer Topi Alahuhta was the Eagles’ top individual performer, finishing the six-kilometer race at Spearfish Canyon Country Club in 19:19.7, good for fifth. Alahuhta outraced, by more than seven seconds, 2022 outdoor track and field All-America Keith Osowski, who finished fourth in the steeplechase at last year’s NCAA Division II national championships. Alahuhta is a true freshman.
CSC freshman Charles Fossey was ninth in the competition, while junior Kyle Shirley was 10th.
On the women’s side, Lydia Peters and Josie Diffendaffer were two freshman who made the top 10 in Spearfish.
Black Hills State was the team winner for both genders at the event.
