CSC Track Has Successful Weekend

 In the words of Coach Seth Mischke, “We had some good things happen” on Sunday when a bulk of the Chadron State College track and field team members participated in the Blue Hawk Games at Dickinson State University in North Dakota.
             
Eagles won first in nine events and were runners-up eight times.  At least a dozen of their marks were season bests.
             
The competition wasn’t as formidable as the Eagles will face when they host the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Meet on April 28-30, but the eight-team field included the University of Mary and Montana State-Billings, both NCAA Division II members, along with Jamestown and Valley City State, besides the host Blue Hawks, who are always competitive.
             
Two CSC veterans were double-winners in the women’s competition. Carlie Collier of Dunning, Neb., won both the 100 and 200 meters with times of 12.50 and 25.83 seconds, and Kyla Sawvell of Wall, S.D., won the shot put at 44-3 ½ and the hammer throw at 175-3 besides placing second in the discus at 138-1.
             
Other highlights for the CSC women saw sophomore Caydince Groth of Cheyenne place second in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 59.85 and come in third in the 200.
             
Another sophomore, Danae Rader of Hansen, Neb., continued to improve her times while placing in both of the hurdles.  In addition, freshman Megan Baloun of Rapid City was third in the triple jump with a season best of 35-7¾. 
             
Both Madyson Schliep of Grand Island and Trinity Chrisawn of Rock Springs, Wyo., had their season-best marks while placing in the hammer throw.
             
Chadron State men also excelled in numerous areas. 
             
Hurdlers Creighton Trembly of Longmont, Colo., and Logan Peila of Miles City, Mont., were bright spots while sweeping the 110-meter highs and the 400 intermediates, respectively.
             
Elsewhere on the track, the Eagles won both relays.  A foursome made up of Emory Yoosook, Trembly, Cole Perkins and Kaden Perez won the 4×100 relay in 42.84 seconds while Harley Rhoades, Peila, Kyland Fuller and Greg Logsdon sped to victory in the 4×400 relay by nearly seven seconds in 3:22.82.
             
The action was Logsdon’s first outdoors this spring after he’d tweaked a hamstring.  He also was the runner-up in the open 400.  Perez, the former Mitchell High standout, took second in the 100 in 11.25 seconds.
             
In the field, Shane Collins won the hammer throw with a mark of 193 feet, 2 inches, signifying that he’s well on his way to recovering from the shoulder injury that kept him from throwing the indoors this winter. 
             
Late last week, the junior from Bison, S.D., threw 193-4 while taking third at the Kansas Relays, where the competition was especially keen.  Collins will be the defending hammer throw champion at the upcoming RMAC Meet, after he set the record of 202-0 a year ago. 
             
Collins also was third in the shot put and fifth in the discus at Dickinson, while teammate Parker Gonser of Windsor, Colo., placed second and third in those events, respectively, and also was fourth in the hammer on Sunday.
             
Other highlights for the Eagles in the field saw Yoosook place second in the long jump at 22- ¼ and Alec Penfield of Lusk clear 6-6 ¾ as the runner-up in the high jump.   Both marks were season-bests. 
 
A handful of other Eagle track and field athletes competed at the Colorado Mesa Maverick Invite in Grand Junction, Colorado.
 
Highlights included Logan Moravec winning the 800 with a time of 1:52.32.
 
Lexi Rule placed fourth in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, while Cale Shafer finished second for the men with a time of 10:03.31
             
The Eagles plan to enter a meet at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City on Friday.  CSC’s placings at Dickinson follow:
