The four CSC women’s wrestlers who qualified for nationals’ seasons came to an end this weekend.

 The four Eagles, Kinsey Smith, Isabell Ortiz, Kayley Garcia and Kamila Montenegro, each qualified by placing in the top four at regionals.

Montenegro, a junior from Las Vegas, had the most success for CSC. She defeated her first round opponent, Aspen Dodge of Adrian College, by fall in 48 seconds.

The win matched her with Cheyenne Bowman of King University. Bowman defeated Montenegro with a 4-2 decision. Bowman earned national runner-up in the 170-pound bracket.

The loss sent Montenegro to the consolation bracket, where she won with a 5-0 decision over Erin Martin of Tiffin in her first consolation match.

In her second consolation match, the Eagle pinned Jenna Joseph of Simpson in 5:02.

The win advanced Montenegro to a match against Annabelle Helm from Gannon University. Whoever won the match would be guaranteed a top eight finish and All-American status, while the loser’s season would be over.

In period one, Helm took a 3-0 lead. Scoring was halted until Montenegro gained one point with 57 seconds left. Neither were able to score another point and Helm won with a 3-1 decision.

At 101 pounds, Kinsey Smith loss by fall to Aaliyah Payne-Parris of Sacred Heart in 1:44.

Smith, a senior from Windsor, Colorado, lost a 4-0 decision to Haley Zinninger of Emmanuel College in her consolation match, ending her season.

Isabell Ortiz, a freshman from Lakin, Kansas, suffered a 9-0 decision in the first round of the championship bracket.

The 116 pounder was matched up with eventual All-American Rose Ann Marshall of Wisconsin Stevens Point in the consolation bracket. Ann Marshall defeated Ortiz 12-1.

CSC’s lone regional champion, Kayley Garcia, was defeated in her first match. Garcia, a freshman of Vista, California, suffered a 4-2 defeat to Marisa Roth of Northern Michigan.

A familiar opponent in Erica Schroeder of Colorado Mesa was Garcia’s matchup in the consolation bracket. At the regional championship, Garcia defeated Schroeder with an 11-0 tech fall.

Schroeder took an early 6-0 lead over Garcia and held on to her lead, ending Garcia’s season with an 8-2 decision.
