The Chadron State College men’s wrestling team opened the 2023 portion of its schedule by overwhelming the York College Bulldogs in a dual at York on Saturday. The score was 57-0.
Officially, just six of the 10 matches took place. That’s because York doesn’t have anyone to fill the 149- and 197-pound weights, and, the Bulldogs’ anticipated representatives 141 and 157 pounds failed to make weight Saturday. Therefore, York had to forfeit those four weights, even though exhibition matches took place between the previously scheduled opponents at the latter two weights.
The Eagles dominated all six of the official matches that took place.
Four of them, Quade Smith at 125, Quen Campbell at 133, Rowdy Pfeil at 174 and heavyweight Mason Watt, pinned their opponents.
In addition, Preston Renner, making his season debut after recovering from an injury, posted a 16-3 major decision at 174 pounds and Keegan Gehlhausen at 184 scored an 17-1 technical fall.
In the exhibition matches, Ethan Leake won a 16-0 technical fall and Brody Lamb pinned his foe. Another of the Eagles, Harrison Gocke also pinned the York wrestle that Lamb also pinned. Leake competes at 141 pounds and both Lamb and Gocke are 157-pounders.
Chadron State Coach Brett Hunter said he was pleased with the way his wrestlers have handled the past week since they returned from the Christmas break. They came back to the campus to resume the season in good physical condition and competed Saturday performed well.
“It’s important that we keep progressing as we enter the conference gauntlet,” Hunter said, emphasizing that the competition will be tough.
The Eagles’ will travel to Adams State at Alamosa, Colo., and New Mexico Highlands at Las Vegas this coming weekend for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals:
