DHHS Encourages Households in Need to Apply for LIHEAP

As the colder months approach, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) encourages low-income households to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP helps low-income households stay safe and healthy by providing financial assistance to offset the costs of heating and cooling. The heating season for LIHEAP begins October 1 and continues through March 31.

To qualify for LIHEAP, a household must:

  • Have income at or below 150% of the federal poverty level (FPL); (see table below)
  • Meet the LIHEAP citizenship and residency requirements;
  • Be responsible for home energy utilities; and,
  • Not be otherwise disqualified or ineligible.

Individuals who are currently receiving Economic Assistance benefits do not need to submit an application to receive LIHEAP.
