Effective Monday, November 18, 2024, the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in compliance with new federal regulations, will check the national Drug and Alcohol Clearing House before issuing, renewing, upgrading, or transferring commercial driver licenses (CDL’s), commercial learners permits (CLP’s), and restricted commercial driver licenses (RCDL’s). “Safety is a top priority for the department,” said Rhonda Lahm, Director of the DMV. “We want to do our part to ensure operators of commercial motor vehicles are qualified and safe to drive on the highways of Nebraska.”
The DMV will also review current CDL, CLP, and RCDL holder’s information when notified by the Drug and Alcohol Clearing house of a status change. Any driver, who on November 18, 2024, has a prohibition in the Clearinghouse, will have sixty (60) days to either downgrade their CDL to a regular driver license or comply with the federal return-to-duty requirements. Failure to take one of these two actions will result in their CDL being canceled. Once the driver complies with the federal return-to-duty requirements, they will be allowed to apply for, and test for a CLP and CDL.
