The Eagle Eye Fire, burning since the pre-dawn hours Tuesday in rugged terrain about 14-miles northwest of Crawford, is now listed at 340 acres.
Officials have not released a containment estimate, but U-S Forest Service Pine Ridge District Ranger Tim Buskirksays on social media that ground crews with helicopter assistance had lines around the fire and successfully held them overnight.
The Eagle Eye Fire is southwest of Hudson-Meng and north of Eagles Eye Rock, a popular climbing site in Sioux County – an area that also burned in the Douthit Fire in 2012.
Buskirk says heavy fuels still remaining from the earlier fire made immediate suppression a challenge yesterday, but firefighters rose to that challenge.
He cites strong cooperation between Forest Service crews and the Chadron, Crawford, and Harrison Volunteer Fire Departments as well as crews from the Pine Ridge Job Corps Center and help from Dawes and Sioux Counties.
A Type-1 helicopter continues to make water drops on the Eagle Eye Fire, using Whitney Lake as its dipping location for water drops – so Buskirk encourages the public to avoid the Whitney Lake area today.
