The Chadron State College softball team defeated UCCS in their double header Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colorado, winning game one 7-2 before winning game two 8-2.
Colorado Springs received around five inches of snow overnight. The CSC coaching and athletic training staff joined the UCCS staff in shoveling the field this morning before the games so they could play.
The wins improve Chadron State to 22-23 overall and 20-18 in conference play. The Mountain Lions drop to 13-32 overall and 10-25 in RMAC play.
Fort Lewis currently holds the sixth and final spot in the RMAC playoffs in two weeks with a conference win percentage of .556, while CSC’s is .526. The Skyhawks defeated Adams State in their doubleheader today.
In game one, Lauren Zimmerman, a sophomore from Reno, Nevada, started the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI double to left center, scoring Bailey Steinke.
CSC’s lead didn’t last long. The Mountain Lions hit a two RBI single in the bottom of the inning, giving UCCS a 2-1 lead.
Steinke, a senior from Lakewood, Colorado, tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, scoring on a passed ball.
The CSC defense only faced three batters in the bottom of the inning and took the lead for good in the top of the sixth.
Brady Laucomer, a freshman from Scottsbluff, doubled to right center, scoring J’lyssa Martinez and Chloe Brown.
Chadron State would add two more runs in the seventh inning with two homeruns.
Ashland Baca, a freshman from Pueblo West, Colorado, started the long ball party with a two-run homerun, scoring her and Zimmerman.
Sloane Quijas, a senior from Erie, Colorado, added a solo homerun to center field, giving CSC the 7-2 lead and victory.
CSC had 10 hits and two errors in the victory. UCCS finished with six hits and one error.
Tori Haug received the complete game victory for the Eagles, improving to 7-14 on the season.
Haug, a junior from Commerce City, Colorado, struck out seven batters while walking one in the victory.
Three different pitchers saw action for the Mountain Lions. Braelyne Crenshaw received the loss, dropping to 2-15 this year.
The Eagles once again spread out their scoring in game two.
Mackenzi Kroll started the action in the top of the second inning with a solo homerun to left field, her 11th of the season.
Zimmerman hit her first homerun of the game in the top of the third inning, giving CSC a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles lead extended to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning after Kroll, a junior from Brighton, Colorado, hit her second solo homer of the game.
Zimmerman added her second homer of the game in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run bomb, scoring herself and Steinke.
Baca added her second home run of the series in the same inning, hitting a solo to left center, giving Chadron State a 6-0 lead.
CSC’s final two runs occurred in the top of the seventh inning. First, a bases loaded walk scored Aliyah Rothstein.
A Quijas single added the second run of the inning, scoring Brown.
The Mountain Lions started the bottom of the seventh inning with a single up the middle.
With one out, Peyton Reisman added a two-run homerun, dropping the hosts deficit to 8-2. The following two batters grounded out, ending the game.
Delaney Farnsworth, a freshman from Centennial, Colorado, earned the victory for CSC. Farnsworth pitched four innings, allowing only one hit while striking out three batters and walking one.
Kenzi Garner, a sophomore from Broomfield, Colorado, pitched the final three innings, received her first save of the season.
Garner allowed three hits and the two runs, while striking out two batters and walking one.
Autumn Kunze received the loss for UCCS, dropping her record to 4-7 on the season.
Chadron State had eight hits and eight runs in the victory. The Mountain Lions finished with two runs on four hits.
UCCS and CSC will play two more games tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
