Funeral services for 93-year old Erna Diers of Sumner, IA, are Sat, June 29, 2024 at 10:30 CT  at St Peter’s Lutheran Church in Oran, IA. 

Burial will follow at St Peter’s Cemetery in Oran.

Visitation is Friday, June 28, from 5-7:00 pm CT at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Readlyn, IA. 

 Memorials may be directed to Erna’s family for later designation.

Erna Diers, age 93, of Sumner, IA, died Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

Erna Diers was born on Sept 1, 1930, in rural Bremer County, IA, the daughter of Otto Sr. and Clara (Banser) Bast. She died

While growing up, Erna was baptized at St John’s Lutheran Church in Western Douglas, confirmed at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly, and graduated from the Oran High School in 1949. 

She attended Wartburg College for one semester, then on Oct 1, 1950, Erna was united in marriage to Jurgen Julius Diers at St Peter’s Lutheran Church in Oran, IA. Erna spent her life farming alongside Julius, gardening, and raising their children on the family farm near Oran.

Erna was an active member of St Peter’s Lutheran and taught Sunday school. Her greatest enjoyment in life was time spent with her family. In her spare time, Erna liked gardening, sewing, crossword puzzles, and jigsaw puzzles.

Erna’s memory is honored by: 7 children and their spouses; Jeanette (Dale) Chasek of Chadron, NE, Fred (Jolene) Diers of Albia, IA, Clara (Merlin) Wendt of Story City, IA, Henry (Peladija) Diers of Hazleton, IA, William (Jane) Diers of Hay Springs, NE, Henrietta (Darrell) Robinson of Plainfield, and Denese Lundry of Cedar Rapids, IA; 35 grandchildren; 89 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Anna Steinbronn of MN, Edna Dietz of Nashua, IA, and Ruth Rathbone of Readlyn, IA; and  son-in-law, Henry Martin of Tipton, IA. 

Erna was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Julia Martin; grandson Mark Chasek; great-grandson Jaxson Popelka; daughter-in-law Doreen Diers; sister Frieda Kraemer; and brothers Robert, Lawrence, and Otto Jr Bast.
