In front of a blaring Chadron crowd, the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers defeated the Chadron State College men’s wrestling team 26-10 Friday night in the Chicoine Center.

After a 4-3 decision due to riding time for Kearney at 125 pounds, the Eagles won three matches in consecutive order before the Lopers won the final 6 of the dual.

Quen Campbell, a senior from Tifton, Georgia and the returning national runner-up, won 8-6 at 133 pounds.

Drew Arnold for the Lopers scored an early takedown to gain a 3-0 lead in the first period. Campbell scored his first two points with a reversal but a late escape by Arnold gave him a 4-2 lead entering the second.

After starting on top, Campbell gave up an escape but scored a takedown to tie the match at five entering the final period. Campbell used two reversal points and a penalty point to win the match in the and improve to 7-0 on the season.

The nations 13th ranked wrestler, Ethan Leake, earned a 13-5 major decision against Daniel DeRosier at 141 pounds.

Leake, a graduate student from Clovis, California, scored first with a takedown before the pair each had two reversals in the round. No scoring occurred during the second period, making the score 7-4 entering the third.

Starting on bottom, Leake scored a reversal that resulted in four nearfall points and led to his major decision.

The Eagles final victory occurred at 149 pounds when Torry Early upset the nations #4 ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, Nick James.

James, a two time All-American, bumped up a weight class for the dual while Early, a senior from Oak Park, Illinois, received his first varsity action of the season.

The action began in the third in final period. Trailing 1-0, Early chose to start on bottom and gained an early escape. He quickly scored a takedown and two near-fall points before James scored a reversal. It didn’t take long for Early to score an escape point but James quickly took him back down again. Leading 7-6, Early managed to escape one more time, giving him an 8-6 victory.

Trailing 10-3, Kearney swept the remaining six matches with two major decisions, two decisions, one fall, and on sudden victory.

The sudden victory occurred at 157 pounds. Nicholas Stoltenberg started overtime on bottom and quickly scored an escape against Brandon Paredes to win the match.

Chadron State wrestles next at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 16 and 17.
