Fentanyl Costs Scottsbluff Police Captain Job, Credentials, Possibly Freedom

Loading

Former Scottsbluff Police Captain Brian Wasson, who last month resigned in lieu of termination after 25 years with the department and 17 as captain, will likely face charges for stealing fentanyl from the department’s evidence room and using it..

Scottsbluff City Manager Kevin Spencer, who is also the police chief, and Nebraska Crime Commission attorney David Stolz both confirm that Wasson resigned Sept 6 after confessing to Spencer and then voluntarily surrendered his police certification.

Nebraska Public Media broke the story on Wasson’s credentials in a report about Wednesday’s meeting of the Nebraska Police Standards Advisory Council.

Stolz told the Council that Wasson had admitted to Spencer that he had an opioid addiction and had been taking fentanyl from the evidence room for almost a year.

The Advisory Council unanimously accepted Wasson’s voluntary surrender of his law enforcement certification and recommended that the state Crime Commission revoke his credentials. The Commission has the final say on certification.

Nebraska State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas told KNEB News that the Patrol has begun an investigation at the request of the Scottsbluff Police Department and that charges could be filed soon.
