While the 86th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally concluded on Sunday, August 16, the South Dakota Department of Public Safety released Highway Patrol data comparing the rally’s crime statistics of 2025 to 2026.

While many statistics were nearly equivalent from the last rally, 2026 fortunately saw a massive decrease in vehicular accidents resulting in injuries. In 2025, 66 injury accidents were recorded during the rally. This year, those numbers sank to 39. Similarly, fatal accidents fell slightly–from 4 in 2025 to 3 this year.

Other noteworthy data points showed a small rise in felony drug arrests (108 vs. 104), and a slight decline in DUI arrests (114 vs. 119). The 2026 Sturgis Rally also resulted in a seizure of over $6,000 in cash. In 2025, no cash was reportedly seized by authorities.

Details of the last Sturgis crash were released by DPS Monday morning as follows:

At 6:41 a.m. Saturday, Interstate 90, mile marker 75: A 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle trike, operated by a 69-year-old male, was driving eastbound on I-90 near mile marker 75 in the rain. The driver lost control and struck a cable guard rail. The driver became separated from the motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet and sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Monument Health of Rapid City.

All information released so far is only preliminary.

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
