Yesterday, Governor Jim Pillen announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff on Patriot Day, September 11, 2024. Flags should be flown from sunrise to sunset.

โ€œSeptember 11 is a solemn day in our nationโ€™s history. It is important that we collectively remember those who were lost and honor what their sacrifice still symbolizes today,โ€ said Gov. Pillen. โ€œTwenty-three years later, our resolve remains. We take nothing for granted, especially those freedoms we hold most dear.โ€

On September 11, 2001, hundreds of first responders were among the almost 3,000 casualties in one of the worst terrorist attacks on our nation’s soil. These included 343 firefighters, or 344 counting Keith Roma who was a fire patrolman that made four trips into the north tower saving about 200 people, 60 police officers, and 8 full time paramedics.

The FDNY also lost its department chief, first deputy commissioner, one of its marshals, one of its chaplains, as well as other administrative or specialty personnel. There were 75 firehouses in which at least one member was killed.

Out of the FDNY, 121 Engine Companies responded, along with 62 ladder companies, 27 officers and all off-duty firefighters were recalled, which was the first time a total recall had been issued in over 30 years.
