Loading

Nebraska Republican State Senator Mike Flood of Norfolk will officially join the U-S House on Tuesday when he’s sworn in at the U-S Capitol to fill the seat of former 1st District Congressman Jeff Fortenberry.

Flood defeated Democratic State Senator Patty Pansing Brooks in a special election June 28th to fill out the rest of Fortenberry’s term, which ends next January.

Flood and Pansing Brooks were picked in April as the candidates for the special election by their respective party central committees, then in May won their primaries for a full 2-year term and will face each other again in November.

Fortenberry resigned from Congress after being found guilty of lying to federal agents in 2019 who were investigating illegal contributions made in 2016.

The 1st Congressional District is in the southeastern corner of the state and includes Lincoln and dozens of smaller communities.
