A former longtime captain with the Scottsbluff Police Department has pled guilty to stealing drugs and over $5,000 cash from the department’s evidence room over a 2-year period..

Brian Wasson faces up to 20 years on each of 2 felony theft charges when he’s sentenced April 23rd in Scotts Bluff County District Court. The charges were formally filed only yesterday with Wasson entering his plea at the same time.

He was then taken into custody before being released on 10% of $5,000 cash bond. District Court Judge Cindy Volkmer of North Platte has ordered a presentence investigation of Wasson.

Wasson was fired last September after some 25 years with the Scottsbluff police, the last 15 as a captain, and voluntarily surrendered his law enforcement certification to the Police Standards Advisory Council the following month.

The complaint for the theft charges filed by Chief Deputy Attorney General David Bydalek says Wasson stole over $5,000 worth of fentanyl and more than $5,000 cash from the evidence room between March 2021 and April 2023.

Wasson has admitted that he had been stealing and using fentanyl from the evidence room. When the department detected irregularities in records, the Nebraska State Patrol was asked to investigate.
