A Gering police officer shot and wounded a suspect late Thursday morning in an incident at a Gering home.

Police Captain Jason Rogers says officers were dispatched to the home following calls about a man who was making statements of self-harm.

When officers arrived, the man pointed a gun at one of them and that officer fired his service weapon and hit the man, who was transported to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff by Valley Ambulance.

KNEB News says scanner traffic indicated the man was taken to surgery immediately upon arrival at the emergency room. There’s no official word on the extent of the man’s wounds or of his condition.

Personnel from the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office,  National Park Service and Nebraska State Patrol assisted with the scene. The State Patrol has the lead role in the investigation to avoid conflict-of-interest issues.
