Guilty But Mentally Ill In Rapid City Killing

Loading

A Box Elder man has pled Guilty But Mentally Ill to a charge of 1st-Degree Manslaughter in the death of a woman last August.

43-year old Jamie Prince originally entered a plea of Not Guilty in the death of Shirley Bartolotta, but accepted a plea agreement that includes a maximum sentence of 40 years.

Normally, a sentence recommendation is just that – a recommendation – but 7th Circuit Judge Matt Brown has agreed to a request from both sides to make 40 years the maximum when he’s sentenced in mid-December.

Judge Brown received a 33-page report on Prince’s mental illnesses and heard testimony from Bartolotta’s brother, Paul Fiddler.

Fiddler said he would never understand why Prince thought it was his place to take a life, and that he doesn’t believe Prince should ever have the opportunity to be released from prison.
