A Harrison man has died of injuries suffered in a 2-vehicle drunk driving accident on Hwy 385 just north of Alliance about 6:00 Saturday morning.

81-year old Dennis Murphy passed away Tuesday evening at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

Nebraska State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas says the Patrol’s preliminary investigation showed that Murphy was northbound in a box truck hauling the mail when he was hit by a southbound pickup that crossed the centerline near Madison Road.

Murphy was taken by ambulance to Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance with life-threatening injuries, then transported to Regional West.

Social media postings by family said his neck had been broken in 2 places and his back in 3 places along with all of his ribs, his jaw, and his elbow.

20-year old Ethen Gonzalez of Alliance, the driver of the pickup, and a passenger were both transported to Box Butte General with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gonzalez was cited for Driving Under the Influence and Minor in Possession of Alcohol, but additional charges are expected with Murphy’s death.

The Harrison community is holding a benefit supper this Saturday for Murphy’s family. The free will donation taco feed will be at the Harrison VFW starting at 5:30.

Those who want to contribute to the Murphy family, but can’t attend the taco feed can made a donation to the Dennis Murphy fund at Security First Bank in Harrison.
