Higher Than Expected Bids Sends New Chadron Street Dept Bldg Back To The Drawing Board

The Chadron City Council has decided to wait before deciding whether to go ahead on a new 60x84x14-foot post-frame garage/storage building for the Street Department.

City Manager Tom Menke told the council Monday night that the city had received 4 bids ranging from just under $108,000 to more than $323,000 and that all 4 were “a little higher than the quotes” the city had been given.

Rather than rushing to look for ways to cut the costs and possibly move forward at a higher cost than budgeted, Menke said the staff consensus was to reject all 4 bids at this time.

Menke said staff could then spend the next several months revisiting the building specifications with the goal of going back out for bids later, possibly after the new fiscal year begins in September, if the numbers worked out.

The council agreed with the recommendation unanimously.
