Chadron State won both games, defeating the visitors 7-0 in game one and 10-0 in five innings in game two. Since CSC shutout the Grizzlies in both games yesterday, it is the first series in school history that Chadron State softball shutout their opponent.

The scoring in game one started in the bottom of the third inning for CSC when J’lyssa Martinez, a sophomore from Denver, Colorado, hit a line drive down the left field line.

The Grizzlies outfielder attempted a diving catch but the ball missed her glove and rolled back to the fence. Martinez used her speed to round the bases and hit the first inside the park homerun ever at CSC’s softball field.

More history occurred in the following half inning for the CSC defense.

After two consecutive doubles and runners on second and third bases, Sydney Muniz hit a line drive to right center for the Grizzlies.

Martinez once again used her speed and made a diving catch on the ball. Both Adams State runners left their bases before the catch was made and never tagged up.

The center fielder rose to her feet and threw the ball to Brady Laucomer at second base. Laucomer proceeded to throw the ball to Lauren Zimmerman at third base, resulting in a triple play for Chadron State.

It was the first triple play by CSC in their program’s history.

Martinez would continue her heroics in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Addison Spears opened the inning with a leadoff single. With Jaelyn Martinez-Lewis pinch running for Spears, Chloe Brown singled and advanced her into scoring position.

The next batter would be J’lyssa Martinez.

After hitting an inside the park homerun earlier, Martinez would hit a three run home run this time, making her the first player in school history with a traditional and inside the park homerun in the same game.

Leading 4-0, CSC would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Mackenzie Kroll scored on a wild pitch for the first run. An Ashland Baca single would score two more runs, giving CSC a 7-0 victory.

Like yesterday, Chadron State’s pitchers played at the top of their game.

Tori Haug, a junior from Commerce City, Colorado, pitched another complete game shutout while improving to 6-13 overall. The junior only allowed four hits while striking out six batters and walking one in the win.

In her two complete game victories, Haug held the Grizzlies to a .149 batting average.

As a team, CSC had 12 hits and one error in the victory.

In game two, Chadron State stole eight bases, a single-game record, on their way to victory in five innings.

The Eagles scored at least one run in each inning. Scoring started with Bailey Steinke advancing home on a passed ball while Sloane Quijas was walked.

Chadron State would take a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Steinke would hit her second single of the game, scoring Martinez.

A Quijas single would later bring home Martinez-Lewis.

With three home runs in yesterday’s double-header, Kroll waited until game two to continue her heavy hitting. With two outs, Kroll hit a three-run bomb, scoring Brown and Laucomer and giving CSC a 6-0 lead.

One run would be scored in the fourth inning after a sacrifice fly by Baca, scoring Aaliyah Rothstein.

With the Division II softball mercy rule being eight runs after five innings, the Eagles only needed one run to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.

With Martinez on second base and Laucomer on third, Kroll would hit her second home run of the game and fifth of the series, giving Chadron State a 10-0 victory.

Kroll, a junior from Brighton, Colorado, finished the series leading CSC with a .750 batting average, six runs and nine RBI’s. Her five homeruns are the most in a series in CSC history.

Like Haug, Delaney Farnsworth earned her second complete game shutout win of the weekend, improving to 11-9 overall.

The freshman from Centennial, Colorado, allowed only two hits while walking two batters and striking out four.

Farnsworth held the opponents to a batting average of .179.

The Eagles had 13 hits with 0 errors in the victory.

The victories improve Chadron State to 17-22 overall and 15-17 in the RMAC. CSC play Black Hills State next weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
