South Dakota suffered at least 3 traffic deaths over the long Thanksgiving weekend, all in single-vehicle crashes, including one Saturday night on Interstate 90 in extreme eastern Pennington County near Wall.
No names have been released from any of the accidents. All 3 of the individuals who were killed were not wearing seat belts.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol says the Pennington County accident occurred 13 miles east of Wall just after 8:00 pm when a westbound pickup left the roadway to the right, overcorrected to the left, and went into the median, where it rolled.
The 26-year old male driver, who was alone, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The first fatality was in another single-vehicle accident, but on Thanksgiving night just before 9:00 pm on Hwy 20 about 5 miles east of Mellette. It happened when a westbound SUV went into the south ditch and struck a culvert approach.
The 68-year old male driver was flown to a Sioux Falls Hospital, but passed away Friday morning. His 34-year old male passenger suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries. He was also not wearing a seat belt.
The third fatal accident was just before 9:00 Saturday morning on Interstate 29 about 4 miles southwest of Worthing.
The Highway Patrol says the driver of a southbound SUV lost control on the icy pavement and went into the median, where the SUV rolled.
A 64-year old man in the back seat was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries. The 62-year old female driver and 79-year old male front seat passenger were both wearing seat belts and suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
