Inmate In Scotts Bluff County Jail Dies – UPDATED With Name

Scotts Bluff County authorities have released the name of the inmate who died early Friday evening after being found unresponsive in his cell in the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center in Gering.

46-year-old David Roberts of Scottsbluff had been arrested two days earlier for allegedly violating Nebraska’s sex offender registry laws.

Authorities said in their initial report there were no apparent signs of foul play or self-harm. An autopsy of Roberts was conducted Monday, but the results have not been publicly released.

     The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the initial investigation into the death Friday evening of an inmate at the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center. The name and age of the man have not been released.

      Authorities say the man was alone in a cell when staff found him unresponsive about 6:30. They performed CPR and used an AED in trying to resuscitate him before he was taken to Regional West Medical Center, where he died roughly 90 minutes later.

        Authorities said there were no apparent signs of foul play or self-harm. An autopsy was performed yesterday morning, but the results have not yet been released.

       Nebraska law requires a grand jury investigation anytime a death occurs while an individual is in custody or in the process of being arrested. The timetable for calling the grand jury is up to Scotts Bluff County Attorney David Eubanks.
