It’s Veterans Day – Sort Of

Loading

Tomorrow is Veterans Day, a federal holiday to recognize all those who’ve served in the U-S armed forces, but since it falls on a Saturday, the holiday aspects will be observed today – mostly.

Federal courts and other nonessential federal offices are closed today as are the stock markets, but banks are open today – although some may close early. Banks that are normally open on Saturday will be closed tomorrow.

Post offices and mail delivery will go ahead as usual today, but will shut down tomorrow. Many schools and companies will also be closed today in observation of the legal holiday, but those in this area are open.

Under Nebraska law, state and county offices get holidays when federal workers get holidays so most of them are closed. The Chadron Public Library is closed both today and tomorrow.

The Crawford and Chadron Public Schools both have their annual Veterans Day Programs this morning.

The Crawford program begins at 9:30 in the High School Auditorium, but all veterans are invited to come in first for coffee and cookies, which will be served from 8:30-9:15.

The veterans are also being encouraged to join Crawford students for lunch with the veterans eating for free. For those who want to dine with the elementary students, their lunch starts at 11:00 while the middle school and high school lunch is at 12:30.

In Chadron, the 8th grade class is again in charge of the program, which begins at 9:45 and will last about 45-minutes.

The Dawes County Veterans Honor Guard will present and retire the colors, several Chadron Middle School students will give readings, and the High School Band and Choir will offer patriotic numbers.

The featured speaker will be retired Nebraska Army National Guard Master Sgt Carl Dehling.
