Joyce Estella (Yardley) Sones was born Feb 28, 1930, on the family farm north of Clinton, NE, to Don and Stella (Smith) Yardley. She.passed away on Friday March 3, 2023, at Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, SD.
Joyce graduated from Gordon High School in Gordon, NE, with the Class of 1946. On October 24, 1948, Joyce married the love of her life, Lyle Sones, in a double wedding with Lyle’s sister Evelyn Sones and Willard Keller at the Presbyterian Church in Gordon.
The dates for the wedding and honeymoon were set because the couples had tickets to the Husker Football game in Lincoln. The newlyweds’ return trip from Lincoln was particularly memorable because the new brides both purchased sets of dishes and one person had to ride in the backseat with the dishes and the other three in the front seat.
Joyce and Lyle raised four sons – Gary, Dwaine, Glen and Rod – which led her to follow football, wrestling, and baseball. She also followed her grandchildren, attending all their events. She enjoyed bowling, golf, cards, and loved watching Nebraska Volleyball.
Joyce babysat in her home for many years before being employed at Stockman’s National Bank. After that, she managed the Senior Center meal program, but her true calling was being Mom to her four sons and their friends.
Joyce always had a love for animals and had many dogs throughout the years. As a child, she had a dog that climbed and stayed on the roof with her while she and her dad shingled. She also had a pig that carried a large basin to put the cow chips in for heat.
Survivors include her sons Gary (Roxie), Dwaine (Peg), and Rod (Robin) all of Rushville; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; her beloved dog Marissa; and many nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Glen, her grandson Ethan Sones, her brother Jerry and wife Becky, and in-laws Evelyn (Willard) Keller, Lee (Kathleen) Sones and Lillian (Irwin) Latchaw.
