Chadron High School has named Kelsey Scott as their next head girls basketball coach. She moves into the position that was vacated following the resignation of Eric Calkins last month.
It’s believed that she is the first female head girls basketball coach in Chadron High history.
“I’m very excited and very thankful to coach at Chadron High. I’m very excited to see where this goes.”, Scott said when reached by phone.
Scott was a three time all-stater at Douglas (WY) High School and helped guide the Bearcats to a state championship and state runner-up finish during her high school career. She followed it up with three years of basketball at Chadron State, starting all three seasons as an Eagle, before being sidelined by a career ending injury.
Scott says her passion for coaching developed with her love of basketball and wanting to give back to the sport that, “gave her so much.”
Scott’s coaching career took shape at her high school alma mater where she served as an assistant volleyball and basketball coach. Her hoops teams qualified for four straight state tournaments and took home the 3A state title her final year on staff.
Scott wants her team to play uptempo and fast paced and be hard nosed on defense. After a few film sessions she says she can see the athleticism of this group and believes she’ll have a good group of kids that will work hard.
Scott’s squad will return all-Western Conference players in Demi Ferguson and Jaleigh McCartney along with four others who either started at some point this past season or saw significant playing time in Haylee Wild, Taverra Sayaloune, Ashlyn Morrison and Taegan Bach.
Scott closed by saying that this summer will include camps and open gyms. As for assistant coaching roles on Scott’s staff, those have yet to be determined.
