The Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas survived an overtime game in non-conference play with the Chadron State College men on Saturday, moving to 2-0 on the season.
CSC fell to 0-2 in the early part of the season.
The Eagles got out in front early, and led 8-0. Kingsville rallied, and briefly took back the lead, but CSC led by as many as 13 in the first half, going into halftime ahead 38-28.
In the second half, CSC scored first, but then went on a scoring drought of nearly six minutes, allowing the Javelinas to tie the game at 42 apiece. A fierce back-and-forth ensued, and the lead changed hands nine times in the last 13 minutes of regulation.
Down by three with 30 seconds to play, CSC junior guard Isaiah Wyatt sank a three pointer to send the game to overtime, knotted at 69 apiece.
In the extra period, Kingsville guards Creighton Avery and Isaiah Payne combined for 10 points, while CSC hit only three field goals and a free throw to allow the Javelinas to escape with an 82-76 final.
Payne led his team with 22 points, while Avery added 16.
Will Chayer was the leading rebounder for the Javelinas, finishing with seven.
CSC had the game’s leading scorer and the player with the most boards. Junior Bryce Latimer hit on 9-of-19 field goals and sunk seven of eight free throws to score 25 points. Junior forward Josh Robinson grabbed 12 rebounds, six on the offensive end, to pace all players.
The Eagles host Sioux Falls on Saturday, November 19, for the home opener in the Chicoine Center.
