Funeral services for 55-year old Laretha “Reet” Brown Bull are Sat, August 27, 2022 at 11:00 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church Hall in Kyle, SD, with traditional Lakota services by Mr Rick Two Dogs

Burial is at St Barnabas Episcopal Cemetery in Kyle

A one-night wake service starts Friday, August 26, at noon at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church Hall in Kyle.

Laretha “Reet” Loray Brown Bull  “Tusweca Wakan Win” ~ Sacred Dragonfly Woman ~ was born on April 23, 1967 in Pine Ridge, SD, to Jerome Brown Bull and Vera (Turning Hawk) Brown Bull. Laretha made her journey to the Spirit World on August 15, 2022 at the Sanford Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

She is the mother of Evan Brown Bull, Paul Apple, Manny and Katelyn ‘Rose’ Clifford, Rebecca Comes and Leonard “Handsome” Martinez III.

Reet went to school at Little Wound School and Marty Indian School. She was a very talented and athletic young lady who enjoyed playing sports such as basketball, volleyball, and softball – including independent basketball for the Dakota Lady Coopers. 

Reet enjoyed coaching basketball for the younger girls and boys, and her players won several awards during tournaments. Her boys team was named the “The Junior Dream Team”.

Reet worked as a correctional officer at the Kiyuksa O’Tipi Reintegration Center (JDC) and the Medicine Root Detention Center in July 1994 to May 1998. She then went to work for the Kyle Court House as a clerk, and later worked for Little Wound School in the print shop and for Oglala Lakota College. 

Reet was a lady of many talents. She created beautiful beadwork, and shawls. She also enjoyed cooking. She made the best popovers and caramel cinnamon rolls in town. 

Laretha is no longer in pain or suffering. She is resting in peace with her relatives in heaven. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

Laretha is survived by her daughter, Katelyn “Rose” Clifford; sons, Paul Apple, Evan Brown Bull, Manny Clifford, and Leonard “Handsome” Martinez III; grandchildren, Jordan Brown Bull, August Jae Brown Bull, Brooklyn King, Bailey Standing Bear, Alexa Clifford, Manny Clifford, Jr., Makayla Kelly and Athena White Elk; sisters, Pearl Little Whiteman, Geri Brown Bull, Tara Brown, Diana Cournoyer, and Cheryl Janis; and brothers, Harold “Chip” Brown Bull and Darrell “Doodgie” Brown Bull.

Laretha was preceded in death by her daughters, Jordyn and Briar Jae; parents, Jerome and Vera Brown Bull; sisters, Galene and Sara Brown Bull; brothers, Vernal and Virgil Brown Bull; nephews, Harold Brown Bull, Jr., Eric Brown Bull, and Jerome “Buzz” Brown Bull; and cousin, Donna Turning Hawk.

Pallbearers will be Devin Clifford, Jesse LeBeaux, Paul Apple, Ira Brown Bull, Tyler Brown Bull, Nathaniel Brown Bull, Miranda Brown Bull, and Cari “Biggie” Shaw.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jonalynn Clifford, Cheryl Janis, April Clifford, Shonna Hunter, Steph McBride, Robert Two Crow, Cordelia Turning Hawk, Darlene McBride, Sandra Janis, Christine Yellow Eagle & Family, JoAnn Yellow Eagle, Shannon Tuttle, Inez Little Whiteman, Sarah Blacksmith, Darrell Little Whiteman, Kim Bettelyoun, Rick & Ethleen Two Dogs, Lisa Brave, Kolten Fisher, and All Friends & Relatives.
