The Depot closed June 30, 1967, and later that year Leona accepted a position with the US Forest Service and moved to Chadron with her only child, Lee Ann.

Leona loved her position with the Forest Service and loved her co-workers, who became important life-long friends to her. She remained the Forest Service until her retirement.

On New Years Eve 1971, Leona had her first date with Dave Wyatt, who became the “Love of her Life.” They married on June 20, 1974, and spent the next 47 years together.

She enjoyed her home out in the country and summertime was her favorite, working endless hours in her yard, planting her flower and vegetable gardens.

Leona was a master seamstress and was known to start sewing a new outfit in the evening and wear it to work the next day!! She always looked like a million dollars and was quite the fashionista with her clothing and jewelry.

Leona had a passion for animals and usually had several pets at one time while often rescuing and helping animals in need of a home.
