Today, Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly together with the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the Nebraska State Patrol (NPS) recognized Nebraskaโ€™s Snow Fighters with Snow Fighter Recognition Week Jan. 12 to Jan. 18.

โ€œSnow Fighter Recognition Week is a chance to express our gratitude to the hardworking professionals who spend long hours behind the controls of snowplows and snow blowers during the winter. Their efforts to clear roadways when needed are essential in helping Nebraskans travel safely to their destinations,โ€ shared Lt. Gov. Kelly.

Earlier this week, Governor Pillen signed a proclamation declaring Snow Fighter Recognition Week as  Jan. 12 to Jan. 18 to serve as a reminder for everyone on the critical importance of winter snow  operations before, during and after storms. During the event, NDOT and NPS representatives joined Lt. Gov. Kelly to emphasize the sophisticated planning and monitoring systems that support Snow Fighters in working efficiently and safely when storms occur.

โ€œAt NDOT, safety remains key to our mission. Each storm showcases the incredible dedication of our Snow Fighters, who work tirelessly to keep travelers safe. From November 2023 to May 2024, they devoted over 208,000 hours to clearing more than 2.7 million miles of road,โ€ explained NDOT Deputy Director of Operations Mick Syslo. โ€œThis year, their hard work continues as they ensure Nebraskaโ€™s roads and airport runways to be accessible for Nebraskans and visitors alike.โ€

NDOT reminds drivers to be patient when coming up on a snowplow. Plows and blowers move slower than other vehicles to ensure thorough snow removal. They can also kick up debris – so slow down and donโ€™t crowd the plow.
