Main Street in Chadron is currently closed from 3rd Street to 10th Street as resurfacing continues, but city officials say the project is on pace for the street to reopen by noon.
The resurfacing is what’s called an asphaltic surface treatment – most commonly referred to as armor coating or chip-and-seal.
The process sprays a thin base of asphalt emulsion onto existing pavement followed by an even layer of fine rock that’s compacted into the surface with heavy rubber-tired rollers.Â
Armor coating can keep good pavement in good condition by sealing out water, but provides no structural strength and will repair only minor cracks. Chadron has used it extensively in the past, but not in the last 10-to-15 years.
