Main Street in Chadron will be closed from 3rd Street, which is also Hwy 20, to 10th Street for parts of the next two days for resurfacing.
City spokesperson Janet Johnson says the closure will run from about noon tomorrow to noon on Thursday with people asked not to drive or park on the street during that time.
TopKote Inc of Yankton, SD, was the lowest of 3 bidders for the contract at $57,000 – more than $20,000 under the next-lowest bid.
Armor coating, also known as chip-and-seal and asphaltic surface treatment, is used to extend the life of asphalt paving that’s still in good shape. Chadron has used it extensively in the past, but not in the last 10-to-15 years.
It sprays a thin base of asphalt emulsion onto existing pavement followed by an even layer of fine rock that’s compacted into the surface with heavy rubber-tired rollers.
Armor coating can keep good pavement in good condition by sealing out water, but provides no structural strength and will repair only minor cracks.
If you have any questions or concerns about the closure of Main Street in Chadron from noon tomorrow to noon on Thursday, please call Janet Johnson at City Hall at 308- 432-0505.
