In planting a tree, we talked about finding the lateral root to determine the depth of the hole. The next step is to check for circling roots. If present, you can try gently teasing them out so they can be stretched outward in the hole. If too solid, it might require a pruning saw to cut into the ball on four sides and an inch or so off the bottom to stop the trend.Â
