Mavericks Head Off Eagles On Friday

he Chadron State College volleyball team lost in three sets, on Friday evening in Grand Junction, Colorado, against 19th ranked Colorado Mesa in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest on Friday, by a score of 3-0 (18-25, 8-25, 14-25).

The Eagles now sit at 7-17 overall, and 5-10 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The first set opened up with the Mavericks scoring the first couple points, but the Eagles kept it close.

The Eagles were within one point of the Mavericks multiple times early in the set. CSC went on a run of 3-0 to tie the set at seven, off a block from Lexi Hurtado, and Bella Adams.

CMU took the lead back before the Eagles were able to tie again.

CSC even took the lead at 13-12 off a Devyn Volz ace serve.

Mesa was able to string together five straight points to gain a big enough lead to hold on to for the rest of the set. CSC was able to score five more points throughout the set, but the Mavericks gained a lead too big for the Eagles to come back. An attack error gave the Mavericks the set point.

In the second set, the Eagles started off cold, scoring their first point, from a Hurtado kill, after the Mavericks scored their first four points. CSC was not able to catch the Mavericks as CMU went on a run of 7-1. This put CMU up 11-2 on CSC. The Eagles struggled to put a run together to catch the Mavericks, as their biggest run was two. The Mavericks ended the set on an 8-2 run. The 25th point was scored by a service ace.

The third set started off well for the Eagles, as they jumped out to an early lead, 3-2. A 5-2 run by CMU caused the Mavericks to take a 7-5 lead. The Eagles stormed back to cut the lead down to one, 8-9, but another Maverick run of 4-1 increased the deficit for the Eagles. A 9-3 run from CMU helped create an even bigger deficit for the Eagles

CSC was never able to recover as they scraped together five more points before the Mavericks put the decisive point in the book off another serving ace.

The Eagles hit only .040 on the night.

Hurtado led the Eagles with a hitting percentage of .286.

Aiyana Fujiyama also hit over .200 with a .231.

The Eagles totaled 24 kills throughout the night with Hurtado leading the attack with eight. Fujiyama, and Adams both added four.

The Eagles defense recorded five blocks on the night, led by Adams, and Fujiyama added two.

CSC will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on Westminster on Saturday October 29th at 4 p.m.
