Mike Troy Elwood

Michael Troy Elwood, age 69, of Omaha, NE, passed away on July 25th, 2023 at Josie Harper Hospice House after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

 Mike was born on December 31, 1953 to Troy Elwood and Lula (Lu) Slothower-Elwood in Rushville, NE. 

He grew up in Batesland, South Dakota and attended eight years of elementary school at Batesland school. He was baptized and confirmed in the Gordon, NE First United Methodist Church in 1965. He graduated from Bennett County High School, Martin, South Dakota  in 1972. He studied at the University of South Dakota, Chadron State College and Mitchell Vocational Technical School in South Dakota.  

His areas of interest included photography, geology and electronics. He also was a lover of music and could quote lyrics, as well as who the writers and performers were for most any kind of music. Music provided him great comfort while he was ill. 

He moved to Omaha, NE in 1983 where he worked for the Holiday Inn Hotel. 

His favorite activities were taking photos of mountain scenery, fishing with his dad and exploring and camping in the outdoors with anyone who would accompany him. He especially enjoyed cave spelunking in the Black Hills. He enjoyed traveling with his mother after his father’s death. They toured California, the Utah and Nevada National Parks and Big Bend in Texas.

He liked to draw and cook. He had three specialties: shrimp Creole, blue cheese potato salad and chicken Dijon. He was easy going, quiet until you got to know him and loyal to his family and friends. 

He is predeceased by his father Troy, his mother Lu, an infant brother Jeffry, uncles and aunts and cousins. He is survived by his sister Lynne Elwood of Omaha, NE, his uncle Charles Slothower of Renton, WA and numerous cousins. 

A memorial service will be held in Gordon, NE, at the United Methodist Church on August 24th at 11:00 am.
