Tim Walz

Minnesota Gov Tim Walz – a native of Nebraska, Chadron State College graduate, and former Alliance High School teacher –  urged Nebraska Democrats on Friday to emphasize grass-roots efforts and “skate to where the puck is going to be.”

Walz was one of the keynote speakers Friday night at the state party’s annual Ben Nelson Gala fundraiser along with Nelson, a former governor and U-S Senator, and Tennessee State Representative Justin Pearson.

Walz, a 6-term congressman before being elected governor in 2018, told the leaders of Nebraska’s minority party “Don’t wait for a savior candidate to come along and be fantastic in a debate and run these great ads – that’s not how it works.”

Instead, he urged them to  “Go neighbor to neighbor, talk to them … explain to them why demonizing people who are choosing to marry a person that they love really doesn’t impact you in any way.”

Walz said the Republican party’s reliance on fear and division “ is not a trait that Minnesotans or Nebraskans value very highly.”

As for President Joe Biden, Walz said if Biden is old, “he’s pretty darned effective” with the passage of an infrastructure bill and building an economy that outpaces other countries across the globe.

As for the start of impeachment investigations by House Republicans, Walz said they have yet to present any evidence that the president is guilty of anything other than loving his son Hunter.

Walz still has close Nebraska ties. His mother lives in Butte while his sister and brother-in-law are in Alliance.
