The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a 21-year old motorcycle rider was killed Wednesday afternoon in a 2-vehicle accident about 5 miles south of Lead on Hwy 385.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.

The Highway Patrol says the man was northbound at a high rate of speed just after 3:00 when he failed to negotiate a curve and laid his motorcycle on its side. He came off the bike and slid under an oncoming pickup.

The motorcycle came to rest on the shoulder while the rider remained underneath the pickup when it stopped. He was wearing a helmet, but sustained fatal injuries. The 63-year old pickup driver was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
