Traffic safety advocates from across Nebraska will gather at the Statewide Safety Conference on Feb. 19 and 20 at the Younes Conference Center South in Kearney. Hosted by the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Highway Safety Office, the conference aims to share key insights, statistics and strategies to support NDOTโs mission of achieving zero traffic fatalities.
Traffic crashes are the cause of more than 230 fatalities and 15,000 injuries in Nebraska eachย year, according to data from NDOTโs Highway Safety Office. With 94% of crashes linked to driver behavior, NDOT and its partners are working to reduce impaired and distracted driving, speeding and other dangerous behaviors through safety campaigns and grant funding opportunities. Additionally,ย increasing seat belt usage remains a critical focus โ seat belts improve survival rates by 45%, yet Nebraskaโs seat belt usage rate was 77.3%, well below the national average of 91.9%.ย
This yearโs conference features local and national speakers covering topics such as grant writing, social media and project promotion, law enforcement training and strategies, child safety seat training, and much more. ย
Traffic safety partners and media representatives are invited to attend and help share vital safety messages with the public. A detailed agenda and schedule can be found atย ndot.info/HSO-conference.
By equipping highway safety advocates with life-saving information and discussing solutions, the NDOT Highway Safety Office is committed to making Nebraskaโs roads saferโworking toward the ultimate goal of zero traffic fatalities.
