Nebraska Republican Attorney General Mike Hilgers has joined Indiana and Louisiana in a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s marijuana reclassification. The reclassification would reclassify marijuana as a less harmful drug.
The lawsuit was combined by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. District with a similar lawsuit filed by marijuana opponent Smart Approaches to Marijuana and argues that the administration’s Justice Department circumvented its regular rule making process.
Hilgers along with former Governor and current U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts has argued against the legality of two medical cannabis laws passed by Nebraska voters by wide margins in 2024. Nearly all states have approved some form of the drug.
Hilgers is concerned that loosening the federal restrictions of marijuana could make it easier to push for recreational legalization which he opposes.
