
The NSAA Boys Wrestling Tournament wrapped up Saturday with the medal rounds. Quinn Bailey (C-157) was the lone champion from the northern panhandle. But there were 10 other wrestlers from Chadron, Crawford and Gordon-Rushville competing.
Zane Cullers at 165 was the other wrestler from Chadron. He won his first round match then in a thrilling quarterfinal match, fell to undefeated Brady Hockstein. That put him in the consolation second round. He won his match by an 11-2 score to move to the heartbreak round. Cullers wraps up his senior season with a 46-7 record.
Crawford had four wrestlers at the Class D state tournament. Carson Gibbons at 144, Paden Morava at 150, Colton Mader at 157, and Cody Holmgren at 175.
Gibbons and Morava went 0-2. Mader lost in the first round but won his consolation first round match then saw his season end in the consolation second round. Holmgren was the closest from Crawford to getting a medal. He won his first round match 11-7. Then fell in the quarterfinals. In the consolation bracket he won his match in the second round then in the heartbreak round lost by pin to fall one match short of earning a medal.
Gibbons finished with a 39-18 record, Morava with a 34-14, Mader was 29-11 on the season and Holmgren wrapped up a 37-6 campaign.
Gordon-Rushville had five in the Class C tournaments. Trevyn Younkin at 113, Jaxon Kearns at 120, Kyler Vincent at 144, Toby Berndt at 215 and Lain Tausan at 285.
Younkin went 0-2. Everyone else had at least one win in the tournament. Vincent won his first round match then fell to eventual state champion Easton Hockstein in the quarterfinals. In the second round consolation bracket he lost midway through the second period by pin.
Berndt followed the same path as Vincent, winning his opening match before losing in the quarterfinals and consolation second round.
Tausan fell in the first round then got a pin to open up the consolation bracket. He matched up with Tycen Breckner from Doniphan-Trumbull, a 50 match winner this season in the second consolation round and fell.
Jaxon Kearns was the closest to getting a medal. He won his opening match but fell in the quarterfinals. Starting his consolation run in the second round he won by pin which put him in the heartbreak round. There he went to overtime against Blayne Willians from Tekamah-Herman where he fell, landing just one win short of earning a medal.
Younkin finished his season with a 26-14 record, Kearns 26-11, Vincent was 36-5, Berndt was 30-14, and Tausan was 34-8.
