The 2024 Summer Olympics have come and gone with a total of 329 medal awarding events over the 17 day event in Paris, France. The United States took home the highest medal honor of any country with 126 and tied with China with 40.
Athletics was where the American’s shined brightest with 14 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze medals for a total of 34. Swimming came in second with 28 then gymnastics followed in third with nine.
The American’s stood out in team sports with men’s and women’s basketball winning thrilling gold medal games vs France that came down to the final minutes, if not seconds. Women’s soccer took down Brazil 1-0 to return to the top of the podium for the first time since 2012. Then in women’s gymnastics gold was conquered once again with the team winning the all around title.
Some notable facts from the Olympics include the US women’s basketball team winning their eighth straight gold medal and 61st consecutive win at the Olympics. 257 different athletes left Paris with a medal which included 44 multiple medal winners, and 13 multiple gold medal winners. In total the US won medals in 34 out of 47 disciplines participated in and set six world records.
The next Olympic games will be the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, then Los Angeles, California will host the 2028 Summer Olympics.
