Panhandle Conference BB Wraps Up Today

Panhandle Conference basketball action will continue today at Chadron State College.

In the boys’ bracket, Crawford will face Hyannis for the championship after the Rams edged out Hay Springs 38-35 in round two Friday. Hay Springs led 11-3 after one quarter, but the Rams held the Hawks to single digits in the remaining quarters with runs of 15-8, 13-9 and 7-7 to get the come-from-behind win. The Rams will play 12-1 Hyannis tonight at 6:45 p.m.

Hyannis won a close 48-47 contest over Morrill to secure its spot in the title game. The Longhorns won the first quarter of play 18-11, but Morrill came back with a 17-16 showing in the second to trail 34-28 at halftime. The Lions then used a 12-5 run to inch ahead 40-39, but Hyannis managed one more bucket than Morrill in the final eight minutes for the win.

Sioux County defeated Edgemont to advance to the fifth-sixth place game, scheduled for 11:45 a.m. against Hemingford. The Warriors trailed 7-3 after the first quarter but closed to within one, 10-9, by halftime. After the break, the game belonged to the Warriors with runs of 13-4 and 20-8 for the 42-22 victory.

Today’s third and fourth place game between Hay Springs and Morrill is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.

On the girl’s side of the bracket, Hay Springs and Edgemont will face each other in the title match at 5 p.m.  Hay Springs advanced with a win over the Crawford Rams, while Edgemont defeated Morrill.

Morrill took an early lead in second round action Friday, but the game was tied at 17 at halftime. Edgemont took the lead with a 10-7 showing in the third quarter and capped the game with a 14-10 run to win 41-34.

Hay Springs controlled its game against the Rams from the outset, going up 11-7 early and leading 20-15 at the break. Crawford managed just seven points in the entire second half, while the Hawks added 22 to the board.

Morrill and Crawford will play for third place at 1:30 p.m., while Hyannis and Hemingford will battle for fifth place at 10 a.m. to open today’s action.
