Skull of Santuccimeryx. The tiny, hornless deer lived in the South Dakota region an estimated 32 million years ago!

4th Saturday Summer Speaker Series continues at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument this Saturday, July 27th at 1pm. Learn about the Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Deer of Badlands and Agate Fossil Beds, the Santuccimeryx.

This tiny species of deer was recently found and classified by 2 park rangers and paleontologists, Mattison Shreero and Ed Welsh. They recently published a paper regarding this little mammal and are excited to share it with Agate Fossil Beds visitors on Saturday.

Mattison Shreero is a Park Ranger at Badlands National Park. Originally from Charlotte, NC, Mattison earned her Bachelor’s degrees in Geology and Studio Art from Carleton College, MN. While working in the Badlands, Mattison has discovered a love of fossil mammals and has since co-authored several upcoming publications, presented research at a geology conference, and learned fossil excavation and preparation techniques. She now plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Paleontology.

Ed Welsh is the Education Specialist at Badlands National Park. Originally from Emerson, NE, Ed earned his Bachelor’s degree in Geoscience at Chadron State College in Chadron, NE and his Master’s degree in Paleontology at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, SD. Ed’s expertise is on fossil vertebrates from the White River Group of the Great Plains, and he is an author of over a dozen publications, mainly focusing on the fossil fauna of the Badlands.
