Nebraska Game and Parks plans to conduct a prescribed burn today on the Chadron Creek Wildlife Management Area, about 12 miles south of Chadron Ignitions should start around noon.
Prescribed burns are conducted only if conditions at the time fall within a narrow range of criteria such as temperature, humidity, wind, and moisture content of fuels. If the criteria don’t match, the burn will be postponed.
Prescribed burns mimic the way natural fires historically shaped the vegetation mix in an area and help decrease the intensity of wildfires, allowing firefighters to better protect homes and structures.”
The primary objectives of Chadron Creek WMA burn are to reduce fuel loading in the ponderosa pine forest and to decrease encroachment of young ponderosa pine onto the prairie. It will also enhance wildlife habitat in the burned area.
